Book Review: Lies Women Believe

I have been thinking about starting a Book Review series on the blog for each book I read.  I have a couple that I have finished recently, one that I am about to finish, and a stack to read before school starts.  Not all the time, but most often I read Christian books.  I will definitely tell you about those because as a small group leader, I know what it is like to always be on the prowl for new studies.  Maybe these reviews will help some of you find a topic that you can use in your group as well or just for yourself.  So here is the very first in my new Book Review series.

Lies Women Believe (and the Truth That Sets Them Free) by Nancy Leigh DeMoss
(P.S.  I don't have an underline button on here, so book titles are going to be in italics. )

I read this book a few months ago with the gals in my Ladies' Bible Study group.  I think we all went into this study with some skepticism (especially about one chapter in particular!).  But we kept repeating to ourselves, "This is not the Bible.  This is not the Bible."  After finishing the book, however, I think I can speak for most of us when I say that DeMoss opened our eyes to many places where the devil has been whispering subliminal messages to us without our even knowing.

Here are the categories DeMoss addresses about lies:
  • Lies Women Believe about God
  • Lies Women Believe about Themselves
  • Lies Women Believe about Sin
  • Lies Women Believe about Priorities
  • Lies Women Believe about Marriage
  • Lies Women Believe about Children
  • Lies Women Believe about Emotions
  • Lies Women Believe about Circumstances
Many, many times I would approach my readings with the mindset that "I don't believe that lie.  I don't have a problem with that."  And time and time again, I stood corrected.  I realized that I believed more of the lies than I had thought.  My, how cunning Satan really is.  He creeps into our lives, before our very eyes, and we don't even realize it.

DeMoss never tells us that our problems will go away because we are Christians.  Some of our problems we are responsible for dreaming up, but others we cannot help.  Our ultimate goal, however, is not to be problem free and happy... but rather, to live like Christ.

But knowledge is power (This is my teacher side coming out!), and the Truth will set you free.  I am so very thankful for the ladies in our Bible Study who contribute to the discussions each week.  I have learned so much from you!  I loved reading this book, and growing from the scriptures it is based upon.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is looking for literature for a womens' study group.  It it full of opportunities for discussion, and caters to women in all stages of life.  And as I was piddling around online, I realized that DeMoss has also written Lies Young Women Believe.  It seems to be for teenage girls, so I probably won't be getting it.  But if you have read it, I would be glad to know your thoughts to pass along!
