Shellac is Back

No, actually it's not.  I just needed a clever title, and it came down to "Shellac is Back" and "Shellac Attack."  Anyways...

Mom and I got an idea last week that was inspired by one of my aunts.  Mom said my aunt used to dip flowers in Shellac, and it made them really pretty.  So we got a bundle and started the experiment.

First, we pushed all the greenery up to the buds (you'll see why later).

We used Amber tinted Shellac.  I wish we would have used clear, but we didn't have any.

You begin by pouring the Shellac all over the flowers into an old bucket.  PLEASE wear gloves because this stuff does not come off for anything!  Lesson learned the hard way.

Then swish the flowers around in the bucket to coat all surfaces... leaves, petals, everything.  This is why you'll want to have your greenery pushed up.

Let it drip.

And find a place for them to dry.  We shoved them up in between two sawhorses.

These aren't very good pics at all, but here they are in the living room...

and in the kitchen.

Again, I wished we had used a clear Shellac because they look dirty to me.  But my mom and mother-in-law both disagree.  And I don't argue with those two women.

I am pretty sure you could use any kind of protector for this project in place of Shellac.  Just whatever you already have around.  I imagine that plain old Polycryclic/Polyurethane would work just fine.

I am interested in knowing if anyone else has ever tried this?  What coating product did you use?
