calling all photographers

Greg and I have been saving up money for our next purchase... a
nice camera. I've about narrowed it down to a Canon or Nikon. My sister has a Nikon D40 and likes it, and I've looked at the Canon EOS series. But I was wondering if anyone else had any advice on a digital SLR camera before (or if) we buy one.

I know nothing about cameras, so post away... We need the suggestions!

Can't go wrong with Canon. They handle noise (the grainy, tiny colored dots in pictures taken in low light) SO much better than the entry level Nikons. I have a 5d Mark II but even the XSI and 50D are great cameras. Alternatively, the Nikon D300 and D700 are the best options in the Nikon lineup (in my opinion). If going for the most budget friendly with decent features, the Nikon D90 will get you the most bang for you buck, as it has many of the same features as the D300.

Can you tell I am a bit of a camera freak? Oh and the BEST all purpose lens that many pros love is the 50mm 1.8. Its less than $100 and produces gorgeous photos.

  3. Okay. So I know this post is...oh...a year and a half old, and obviously you got a camera...and a Nikon at that...and I just have to say...Go NIKON! I shoot Nikon. I shoot it in the dark. I shoot it in the park. I shoot in in the sky. I think you can see why.

That was weird. Maybe I just should have said "Nikons are great." 'Cuz they are.

I have a D200 and plan to upgrade to the D700 which is a full-frame. It was love at first click. Absolutely amazing. Don't forget though, your lens is as or more important than your camera. (They're also as or more expensive than the camera!)
